Het was een levendige boel bij Splendor op 20 november 2024. Ongeveer honderd bewoners, ambtenaren, ondernemers, studenten, sekswerkers, politiemensen, studenten, vergroeners, sociaal werkers, politici, kunstenaars en anderen maakten kennis met elkaar en gingen aan de slag voor de oude binnenstad.

Nadat iedereen had bijgedragen aan de bereiding van een lekkere brunch, vonden ’s ochtends en ’s middags sessies plaats om uit te wisselen en plannen te maken. Lees hieronder een kort verslag per sessie:

Aan het einde van de middag presenteerden nog acht initiatieven zich tijdens de Initiatievenmarkt: De Bewonersraad, Een Goed Gesprek, de Vespers in de Oude Kerk, Red Light Arts and Culture, The Amsterdam Pledge, de 10.000 poppen van Jim, Inloophuis De Kloof en Bewonersorganisatie Wallenbuurt.

We verheugen ons iedereen weer te zien in 2025 en te horen hoe het gaat met alle initiatieven!

De Politie

Teamchef Hannelore en wijkagent Marcel kwamen kennismaken met buurtbewoners, delen wat ze doen en horen welke vragen er leven. Er bleek oa behoefte om mee te helpen bij de aanpak van ondermijning. Hoe kun je dat doen? Daarvoor is praktische informatie nodig. 
Sowieso is er de wederzijds wens om met elkaar in gesprek te blijven. Op woensdagavond 26 februari organiseert het politieteam samen met de gemeente een bijeenkomst in de Zuiderkerk om met bewoners in gesprek te gaan. Meld je alvast aan via [email protected].  

Schonere binnenstad 

In de sessie over een schonere binnenstad waren Wallen Schoon en Clean Up Your City aanwezig die al met vrijwilligers druk bezig zijn om buurt schoner te krijgen én de gemeente te bewegen meer te doen. Daarnaast werden nieuwe ideeën geopperd om de buurt schoner te krijgen – we zijn een creatieve buurt! – zoals een kantelbak langs de kade, of een buurtvriendelijk statiegeld inzameling systeem. Maar dat was niet het belangrijkste dat uit de sessie kwam. Een schonere binnenstad is een wens die breed gedeeld wordt, ook bij de gemeente. Het leidt tot vele, losse initiateven en ideeën…. Maar helaas een schot hagel. De vraag is hoe we losse initiatieven en plannen meer met elkaar kunnen verbinden, zodat we gezamenlijk daadkrachtiger worden en beter samenwerken, ook met de gemeentelijke diensten. 

Betrokken buren

De sociale demografie van de binnenstad van Amsterdam verandert. Tot 2050 neemt de vergrijzing alleen maar toe. Tijdens deze informerende ochtendsessie maakte Heidi Hofman van Stadsdeel Centrum een beknopte schets van de toekomst, de uitdagingen waar we nu al mee te maken hebben en die nog voor ons liggen en de acties die het stadsdeel hierop onderneemt. Maar met alleen acties vanuit de gemeente komen we er niet. Daarom gaf Louke Spigt een mini inkijkje in haar leven als ‘betrokken buur’ en hoe organisaties en buurtbewoners beter kunnen samenwerken.

Internationals in the Community

Een mix van internationale en Nederlandse buurtbewoners hebben ervaringen uitgewisseld en creatief nagedacht over manieren om Internationals meer te betrekken. Deze voelen zich graag een onderdeel van Amsterdam, willen zich inzetten en verbinden met de plek en mensen. De Voluntour en Comfi Food Night bij de Boomsspijker zijn twee succesvolle initiatieven. Nieuwe ideeën die opkwamen om bestaande bubbels te verbinden zijn oa een Taalruilcursus en een evenementenmarkt voor Nederlanders en Internationals.

De BIZ-zen en Stichting Nieuwmarktbuurt

Voorzitter Jim van de Stichting Nieuwmarktbuurt vertelde wat de BIZ-zen zijn (ondernemersverenigingen) en dat de 6 BIZ-zen in deze buurt zich hebben verenigd in de Stichting Nieuwmarktbuurt voor een positief smoelwerk van de oude binnenstad.
Er ontstond een discussie met uiteenlopende meningen over de manier om de drukte van toeristen tegen te gaan. Wel waren we eensgezind dat de aanpak van ondermijning meer aandacht vereist. Jim noemde de voortrazende monocultuur in het winkelaanbod een gevaar voor de sociale cohesie en daarmee ook voor het draagvlak van de BIZ-en. Rots gaat een persbericht opstellen om daar als bewoners, ondernemers etc gezamenlijk reuring over te maken.

Grip op de Lokale Economie

Een grote groep belangstellenden ging met gemeenteraadsleden Erik (D66), Yasmine en Elisabeth (GroenLinks) in gesprek over effectieve manieren om de leuke bedrijvigheid te koesteren en weerstand te bieden aan toeristisch aanbod en witwasserijen. Het Amsterdams Investeringsfonds, Reclaim het Centrum, de vergunningsplicht, de oprichting van meer Vastgoed-BIZ-zen en het uitbreiden van de rol van NV Zeedijk, Stadsgoed NV etc werden als kansen benoemd. Een groepje gaat zich inzetten voor een aantal van deze ontwikkelingen, een ander groepje spant zich in om bewoners en ondernemers meer bij Aanpak Binnenstad te betrekken.

Groen Stadshart

Groen Stadshart neemt het initiatief voor het vergroenen van boomspiegels en gevels, beginnend bij de Wallen. Tijdens een heel inspirerende werksessie sloten zich nieuwe deelnemers aan, ook vanuit de Nieuwmarktbuurt. Er is oa gesproken over (blad)compost en regentonnen. Stadsdeelbestuurder Nienke sloot een uurtje aan als actief toehoorder. Wil je ook lid worden van de WhatsApp community? Stuur een berichtje naar 06-59924699.

Collaborating around the Heritage of the Red Light District

Tijdens de sessie van Red Light Heritage was er een divers publiek aanwezig: Red Light Heritage team, het Prostitutie Informatie Centrum, Pleasure Society, Porn Film Festival, Red Light Arts & Culture, en andere kunstenaars en bewoners uit de buurt. Iedereen was enthousiast om elkaar te ontmoeten en van elkaar te leren. Red Light Heritage begon met een presentatie over de veranderende buurt in relatie tot erfgoed, en hoe sekswerk vaak wordt uitgesloten van dit erfgoed. Met een praktische kit om nieuwe samenwerkingen aan te gaan tussen sekswerkers en niet-sekswerkers, deden de deelnemers veelbewogen mee aan de gestructureerde brainstormsessie waarbij de nadruk lag op elkaars behoeftes, kwaliteiten, en het oplossen van problemen in samenwerkingen. Hieruit kwam een storytelling show, een buurtfeest, oplossingen om in contact te blijven op een sekswerkvriendelijke manier, en een “sex positive event.” Voor dat laatste zijn al gelijk concrete stappen gezet!

Fonds voor Centrum Workshop 

Buurtbewoners konden hun idee verder ontwikkelen tot een plan aan de hand van verschillende vragen. Hierbij werden ze geholpen door ervaren initiatiefnemers en buurtcomitéleden.  Vier plannen werden gepresenteerd tijdens de initiatievenmarkt waarbij ze kans maakten op €1000. Daar brachten 55 buurtbewoners hun stem uit. Rots won €1.000 om de kraakgeschiedenis van de buurt in kaart te brengen. Het Drugspastoraat kreeg een bijdrage van €500 voor Mieke haar initiatief voor kerstpakketjes voor daklozen. De rest van de ideeën worden / kunnen ingediend worden via www.fondsvoorcentrum.nl en gaan mee in de volgende beoordelingsronde.

Grooote Stadshart Top 2024 

It was a lively scene at Splendor last Wednesday. Around one hundred residents, civil servants, entrepreneurs, students, sex workers, police officers, greeners, social workers, politicians, artists, and others came together to connect and take action for the inner city. 

After collaborating to prepare a delicious brunch, participants had a choice of interesting sessions in the morning and afternoon:

• Engaged Neighbors 
• Internationals in the Community 
• The BIZ and Stichting Nieuwmarktbuurt
• Influencing the Local Economy 
• Groen Stadshart (Green Inner City)
• Collaborating around the Heritage of the Red Light District 
• Fonds voor Centrum funding workshop

Below is a brief summary of each session, the ideas that were exchanged and plans that were made: 

The Police 

Team leader Hannelore and local officer Marcel introduced themselves, shared their work, and listened to local concerns. One key takeaway was the need for support in addressing organized crime. But how can residents contribute? Practical information is essential.  There is a shared desire to maintain dialogue. On the evening of February 26th the police team and the gemeente will host a meeting at the Zuiderkerk to engage with residents. Sign up through [email protected].  

Cleaner City Center 

The session on creating a cleaner city center included Wallen Schoon and Clean Up Your City, both actively working with volunteers to clean the neighborhood and push the municipality to do more.  New ideas included a tilting waste bin along the canal or a neighborhood-friendly deposit return system. However, the key takeaway was need to connect the many hyperlocal initiatives and municipal services to create a more impactful and collaborative approach.  

Engaged Neighbors

The social demographics of Amsterdam’s city center are changing. By 2050, the aging population will continue to increase. During this informative morning session, Heidi Hofman from the Centrum District provided a brief overview of the future, the challenges we are already facing, those that lie ahead, and the actions the district is taking in response. However, actions from the municipality alone are not enough. That’s why Louke Spigt gave a brief insight into her life as an ‘involved neighbor’ and how organizations and local residents can work together more effectively.

Internationals in the Community 

A combination of international and Dutch neighbourhood residents shared experiences and ideas to involve internationals in the community. Internationals want to be and feel a part of Amsterdam, be useful, do something that has meaning and connect with the place and people where they live and work. The Voluntour and Comfi Food Night at de Boomsspijker are two successful initiatives. Some new ideas to connect existing bubbles include a language exchange course and event market including Dutch and Internationals.

The BIZ and Stichting Nieuwmarktbuurt

Jim, chair of the Stichting Nieuwmarktbuurt, explained the concept of BIZ associations (business improvement zones). The six BIZ associations in this neighborhood have united under the Stichting Nieuwmarktbuurt to promote a positive image of the inner city. The participants disagreed on how to manage tourist crowds. However, there was consensus on the need for more focus on addressing organized crime. Jim expressed concern about the advancing monoculture in retail which threatens social cohesion and support for the BIZ associations. 

Rots will draft a press release to rally residents, entrepreneurs, and others for collective action.  

Influencing the Local Economy 

A large group of attendees discussed with city council members Erik (D66), Yasmine, and Elisabeth (GroenLinks) how to support diversity in local businesses while countering tourist-focused enterprise and money laundering activities. Some ways forward are the Amsterdams Investeringsfonds, Reclaim het Centrum, setting permit requirements, creating more real estate BIZ associations, and expanding the roles of NV Zeedijk and Stadsgoed NV.  

One group committed to driving some of these initiatives forward, while another pledged to involve residents and entrepreneurs more in the Aanpak Binnenstad.  

Groen Stadshart (Green Inner City)

Groen Stadshart is leading efforts to create gardens in tree pits and along facades, starting in the Red Light District. This inspiring workshop engaged new participants, including the Nieuwmarkt neighborhood. We discussed the use of leaf compost and rain barrels. District administrator Nienke joined for an hour as an engaged listener.

Collaborating Around the Heritage of the Red Light District 

A diverse audience was excited to meet each other and share knowledge: the Red Light Heritage team, the Prostitution Information Center, Pleasure Society, Porn Film Festival, Red Light Arts & Culture, along with other artists and local residents. 

Red Light Heritage kicked off with a presentation about the neighborhood’s transformation in relation to heritage, emphasizing how sex work is often excluded from heritage discussions.  Using a practical toolkit designed to foster collaboration between sex workers and non-sex workers, participants actively engaged in a structured brainstorming session. The focus was on understanding each other’s needs and strengths while solving challenges in collaboration. This resulted in ideas like a storytelling show, a neighborhood festival, solutions for maintaining contact in a sex worker-friendly way, and a “sex-positive event.” Concrete steps were immediately taken to organize the latter! 

Fonds voor Centrum Workshop 

Local residents were given the opportunity to develop their ideas into actionable plans using a set of guiding questions. They received support from experienced community leaders and neighborhood committee members. Four plans were presented during the initiatives market, where participants competed for €1,000. A total of 55 neighborhood residents cast their votes.  Rots won €1,000 to document the neighborhood’s squatting history. The Drugspastoraat received €500 for Mieke’s initiative to provide Christmas packages for the homeless. Other ideas can still be submitted via www.fondsvoorcentrum.nl and will be considered in the next evaluation round.  

Initiatives Market

At the end of the afternoon, eight initiatives presented themselves during the Initiatives Market: De Bewonersraad (The Residents’ Council), Een Goed Gesprek (A Good Conversation), the Vespers at the Oude Kerk, Red Light Arts and Culture, The Amsterdam Pledge, Jim’s 10.000 dolls, Inloophuis (Walk-in House) De Kloof and Neighborhood Residents’ Organization Wallenbuurt.
